The Evolution of Medicine: Blending the Old and New

The Evolution of Medicine: Blending the Old and New

~ Gwilda Wiyaka ~

The face of medicine is ever changing. As new studies become available, equipment and drugs continue to improve, keeping up with the times. Yet, as anyone knows who has had a condition difficult to diagnose or treat, modern medicine may not have all the answers. Nor, with the complexity of the human body, can we expect it to. In our passion for the latest greatest, we have moved away from the more ancient forms – forms that have been around and viable for generations. In so doing, have we thrown out the baby with the bathwater? Is there value to be had in combining old forms with the new?

With us this hour to explore this intriguing possibility is  Dr. Sheila Patel. Dr. Patel is a board-certified family physician, certified yoga and meditation instructor, Ayurvedic consultant and Chief Medical Officer for Chopra Global. For more than a decade, she practiced full-spectrum rural family medicine, and currently maintains an outpatient family medicine practice in Southern California, where she brings both modern and ancient forms to the care of her patients.
