I Am More Than My Liver: Exploring the Human Experience of Health and Illness

I Am More Than My Liver: Exploring the Human Experience of Health and Illness

As medicine has become more specialized, have we lost sight of the person and their experience? Have we reduced the patient to a bag of parts? After all, we all know the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

With us to explore the importance of medical humanities is Jonathan McFarland. Jonathan currently works as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at UAM. Jonathan is also a committee member of the European Narrative Medicine Society and is a member of the Association of Galician Doctors. He is the President of The Doctor as a Humanist, which is an international organization of students, scholars, educators, and practitioners dedicated to the study, preservation and promotion of the humanities and humanism in medicine and healthcare around the world.

 Have You Lost Your Mojo?

With the stresses and distractions of day-to-day life in the fast lane, it is easy to forget our dreams, lose enthusiasm and get lost in a fog.

With us this hour to hopefully offer up tools to regain our Mojo and reclaim our lives is Susan Ford Collins. Susan is the author of “BLUR: Clear the Way Ahead...Even In The Worst Of Times,” As a young researcher at the National Institutes of Health, Susan asked: What more could we learn if we studied Highly Successful People, not just ill and dysfunctional ones? Her colleagues laughed, but Collins was on the verge of a major breakthrough … The Technology of Success. Susan has joined us today to share what she found.
